Out on my own
On this sunny Saturday T and i walked to the village. After she showed me the street to B's (my tutor) house i was on my way. We had a good language lesson and the children in her compound were thoroughly entertained when i started reading the simple primer! I met most of B's family and got to try fresh mint tea made by her sister who boiled it over a charcoal fire lit in a coffee can, and proudly served by her cute 3yr old nephew. I also met a few of her neighbors including one gentleman who wants me to marry his son! That was a fun one to try to get out of gracefully! After photo ops with the kids and giving my greetings to B's aged father i was off to the luma to do my grocery shopping.
My first stop was at the table where T's "mom" sells veggies. I sat under her small stand's beach umbrella and we chatted about the weather, her niece whom i treated last week and what was on my shopping list. And only some of this was in English!! We drew quite a crowd of young girls, echoing as i talked. I can only hope it was due to my accent and not any horrid mistakes!!
Then this sweet old woman hurried off to find me a kilo of potatoes because none of the sellers around her stand had any for sale and because i'm her "foreigner grand-daughter" now! She is so cute. After a while one of my arms was getting a little toasty as it was in the sun so i headed off to fend for myself and finish shopping. i think i did quite well buying a "pile" of carrots all by myself! But i couldn't find any bananas except for the lady selling the entire branch of green bananas.
I walked home from the market with plenty of stops to greet people along the way. Then i stopped into visit the clinic's neighbors. The oldest daughter has been inviting me to come and chat every time i walk by, adding "we are all the same, black & white" so how could i keep putting her off? She preferred to practice her English so my language-addled brain had a good rest. Her younger siblings taught me how to play "ledo" which is a Parcheesi-type board game. They'd industriously colored the board onto a piece of cardboard and had a square piece of eraser marked with dots as the dice and had broken up some colored plastic into tiny bits for the pieces. I really wanted to take photos but it was my first time at their compound so i figured i'd wait until i know them better.
But i've included photos of B's family.
